Share the Care is a term you may have already heard circulating in RCI email announcements. Share the Care is a means of organizing and sharing the work of running an organization so the work is not done by just a few but is shared among its members. This method of sharing the workload first originated in a group that formed for the purpose of providing care for a seriously ill person. (See the book Share the Care or go to the website www.sharethecare.org). RCI is adapting the model to the needs of our organization.
Our intention is that the work of sustaining, building and running the organization falls upon many hands rather than a few. All too often in organizations only a few members do the majority of the work then burn out and quit. With Share the Care we will all do all little and instead of burning out we will get to know one another, feel useful and foster collaboration, support and compassion among our members. We want an organization where ideas become innovation, where problems are quickly solved and yet no one or two do too much. We want to have a happy and healthy organization, have fun and to get know one another. We want to meet the needs of our members, promote Recovery Coaching effectively and fulfill our mission. We can do it if we Share the Care.
Every two weeks one RCI officer and one person from the general membership function as captain and co-captain. It is their responsibility, for two weeks only, to field questions and requests from the board, the officers and the general membership and then find answers and solutions. That means finding the right person for the job – the person with the answer or who can take on a task. To facilitate their work, the captain and co-captain a talent pool consisting of you, the willing members of RCI. To find out more about what the co-captain does, please click here.
Here’s an example. Let’s say the RCI treasurer wants to make an Excel spreadsheet for a special project. While she’s familiar with the basics of the Excel program she needs help in creating formulas. Using Share the Care strategy, the treasurer would email the current captain and co-captain with her request for help. The captain or co-captain would then refer to the Talent Pool, under ‘Computer Programs’ and find those members who have said that they are terrific or good with Excel, then ask for their help and put them in touch with the treasurer. And now the special project could proceed. That’s the basic structure. You can see how easy it is: if you are a captain or co-captain all you are doing is delegating. If you have signed up for STC you are only asked to do what you like to do.
Your involvement is essential if RCI is to grow with out burning out. We ask you to complete your Talent Sheet (click this link to download a Word file) and send it in, and say yes when asked to help. The more members who fill out the STC Talent form the bigger our pool gets, the more people are helping out and the less any one person has to do. With your help we can run this organization with innovation and creativity! Now that has appeal! Please join in.
Please take a few minutes now to fill out the Talent sheet and return it to Catherine@treetopcoaching.com (Share the Care coordinator. And thanks to all our members for Sharing the Care.
